Doctolib: a health mission and an envelope for innovation


Since the Pacte law of 2019, companies have the possibility of defining themselves as companies with a mission. According to the observatory of these organizations, France has 990, including giants like Danone.

Non-binding, this status allows companies to put forward “several social and environmental objectives.” For Doctolib, the determined missions are thus to “contribute to improving the daily life of healthcare teams and the health of patients.”

Doctolib displays its ambitions for 2023

In 2023, the French nugget therefore becomes a company with a mission. And various reasons already allow it to claim its ambition “to be a useful, reliable service accessible to all.”

According to the Ifop poll, Doctolib boasts, for two consecutive years, “of being the service that most improves the daily life of the French.” Its use is intended to be more inclusive and also serves millions of patients throughout the country and not just the big cities. Finally, Doctolib has 340,000 personal health users.

But to what concrete end does the decision to become a company with a mission correspond? It is above all symbolic. To ensure that it goes beyond the symbol, however, the startup is committed to achieving social and environmental goals.

Above all, these objectives will be “quantified, measurable and communicated transparently each year.” Their proper execution will also be entrusted to an independent Mission Committee.

Its implementation is planned for the course of the year. Its composition remains to be determined. The company indicates that it will include “a dozen people” with various profiles representing patient associations, health professionals and medico-social associations. Employees will also be members.

92 million euros for 7 priority projects, including safety

To give credibility to these intentions, Stanislas Niox-Chateau, co-founder of Doctolib, announces in parallel the allocation of an envelope of 92 million euros. This amount will go in 2023 to the financing of innovation.

This budget aims, for example, to “propose new services.” Innovations will focus primarily on 7 areas, including cybersecurity. Doctolib thus plans developments intended to fight against non-honored appointments

To its Doctolib Médecin software, the start-up wishes to integrate new functionalities (invoicing and medical follow-up of patients) to cover other specialties and health professionals.

Organizations are willing to take on the status of mission-based company, a rewarding operation in terms of communication and not very restrictive. Entrepreneurs and bosses, on the other hand, are very reluctant to share the added value and adopt an “employee dividend.”
