The Apple Watch could be very useful in diagnosing the onset of Parkinson’s disease several years in advance.
The Apple Watch is known to have predicted a serious and imminent health accident many times, which could have saved its wearer. But the health functions of the Apple connected watch would not be confined to emergencies, and could help identify certain pathologies over the long term.
Parkinson’s disease in sight
When we think of the medical diagnostic capabilities of the Apple Watch, we most often think of anything to do with the heart. But it could have other applications according to British researchers from the UK Dementia Research Institute (UKDRI) and the Neuroscience and Mental Health Innovation Institute (NMHII) at Cardiff University.
The targeted pathology? Parkinson’s disease, this chronic and slowly evolving disease which generally appears in the fifties, and whose very first symptoms can be perceptible in the previous decade. The data collected by Apple’s connected watch could make it possible to anticipate the disease.
Upstream data collection
Indeed, the data recovered by the Apple Watch could be transmitted to artificial intelligence algorithms, which, by processing it, could then detect the disease up to seven years before its appearance. The researchers point out that connected watches can make it possible to recover this valuable information, and that in this area, it is the Apple Watch that benefits from the best motion detectors.
More generally, the researchers claim that the use of algorithms would be more effective than traditional methods in detecting Parkinson’s disease. Sensors, even more sensitive than those of the Cupertino company’s watches, could therefore be used in the future. It remains to be seen how such detectors can be installed in watches which, in essence, have a limited space.

Apple seems to have put all of its resources this year on the Apple Watch Ultra, and opted for the easy way out with a proper recycling of its previous smartwatch, except for the addition of the temperature sensor, whose use for determining menstrual cycles is very well thought out. There are other new features, but the majority of them come from the software and are available on earlier models.
We now expect a more straightforward update, starting with the design and especially the autonomy, of the Apple Watch for the next version and that Apple no longer rests on its laurels.
