Benedict Cumberbatch is back in German cinemas with “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness”. We interviewed the Hollywood star and got some exciting insights into the latest adventure from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

Doctor Strange’s last appearance was in ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ and Benedict Cumberbatch tells us which other films and series we should watch before ‘Doctor Strange 2′. He also explains the ending of the new “Spider-Man” film and goes into Doctor Strange’s career as the Avengers’ babysitter.

At the beginning, Benedict Cumberbatch gives the all-clear for all the fans who couldn’t keep up with the Disney+ series like “WandaVision” and “Loki”. While the series are helpful in understanding Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness better, the film also stands well on its own. “I wouldn’t give any homework,” he says of catching up.

However, he recommends the film “Spider-Man: No Way Home” to the fans, after all, it creates a good understanding of the concept of the multiverse and at the same time represents his last appearance as Doctor Strange. The magician meets Peter Parker and has to go with him get along with his childish airs.
Cumberbatch explains why Doctor Strange is helping Peter, using a spell far too powerful for Peter’s needs: “Doctor Strange felt sorry for the boy. He saw how he lost his mentor, Tony Stark.” Cumberbatch once again refers to the ending of “Avengers: Endgame”, which was sort of orchestrated by Doctor Strange, who knew that there was no way to defeat Thanos without Tony Stark dying.
“He knew it was an inevitable path to victory and through his humanity he understands what Peter’s price was and has a genuine affection for him,” Cumberbatch said. The reason Strange comes across as snotty at times is because he “forgets how young Peter is.” On the battlefield, they fight as equal heroes: “But [Peter] has two lives and the other life is just this innocent, lovely and kind hearted student who only wants the best for friends and family.”
In the end, Strange’s compassion is said to have been the decisive factor in using a dangerous spell to help Peter: “And how [Strange] at the end of the film [“Spider-Man: No Way Home”] says: ‘All of us who love you forget who you are.’ He takes himself into it because he appreciates him a lot.”
Who is stronger: Doctor Strange or Wanda?
Based on pictures, trailers and leaks, Wanda is believed to become Strange’s antagonist. It’s not official, but Benedict Cumberbatch was tempted to make a statement about who was stronger: Doctor Strange or Scarlet Witch?
“Uff, that’s a good question, I really don’t know, they’re both very powerful,” the actor says diplomatically. Very different from Elizabeth Olsen, who is sure that Wanda is far superior to the magician.
But Strange not only has to deal with Wanda in the film, but also with other variants of himself. An acting challenge that Cumberbatch enjoyed a lot: “It was great! It was fantastic, I mean, I could really let off steam as an actor.”
When asked if there was a Doctor Strange variant that he liked best, he dodged: “I don’t announce my favorites … I do have one, but I won’t reveal it now. Sorry!” We know from the trailers and pictures so far that there will be a Zombie Strange, the extreme Defender Strange and a malicious Strange in addition to our Doctor Strange.
Will we also see Doctor Strange Supreme from the animated series “What If…?” will see in the film, time will tell. Certainly more variants of the magician can be expected. On May 4th, 2022, when “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” starts in German cinemas, we will know more!
Of course, those of you who would like to do a catch-up marathon beforehand can do so on Disney+. “Spider-Man: No Way Home” is not available in the stream compared to “WandaVision” and “Loki”.
