Doctor Strange: why the director did not return for the sequel to the Marvel film

Why did Scott Derrickson, the director of the Marvel blockbuster “Doctor Strange,” decide not to return behind the camera for “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness”? He recently explained this.

It was with the blockbuster Doctor Strange, led by Benedict Cumberbatch, that Scott Derrickson made his big debut at Marvel in 2016. And everything seemed on track for the American filmmaker to come back and direct Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, a sequel in which could have appeared an iconic hero. But the deal did not materialize due to “creative disputes.”

Guest of The Discourse podcastScott Derrickson explained why he refused to take the helm of Doctor Strange 2. “All I can say is that what we said at the time in an official statement really happened, it’s the truth. We had real creative differences.”declares the man who recently directed the horror film Black Phone.

“The film I wanted to make and the way I wanted to make it was different from what they wanted. It was becoming more and more obvious that we weren’t going in the same direction.”continues Scott Derrickson.

“And that’s how, in my opinion, you make a very bad film. When the producer or the studio makes a film different from that of the director, you end up giving birth to a monstrosity. That’s why that I had to bounce back elsewhere.”

Scott Derrickson, who wanted to make his Doctor Strange 2 “a real horror film”, therefore left the adventure. It was Sam Raimi who took charge of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madnessreleased in theaters in 2022.
