Action, costumes that you no longer know what to wear and good humor: this is what stands out most from the teaser for the next season of Doctor Who.
Now that his regeneration has taken place in the special 60th anniversary episodes, and the Christmas episode to introduce him to his partner has been broadcast, the new Doctor is ready for his new adventures. Or almost. Indeed, this new departure on all fronts will only arrive on BBC and Disney+ next spring. In the meantime, here’s a look at what’s in store for the 15th Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa), Ruby Rose (Millie Gibson) and the Whovians in what’s officially being billed as “season 1.”
Complete regeneration for Doctor Who
Technically, since the reboot in 2005 of the historical BBC series launched in 1963, the new season coming next May will be the fourteenth. However, between its new international broadcast deal with Disney+, the return as showrunner of Russell T Davies (he was from 2005 to 2010), and the new duo in front of the camera, BBC has chosen to reset the counters. So, next May, it’s officially the first season of a Doctor Who modernized which will be launched.
The goal is clear: attract a new audience while trying not to intimidate them with years of references, events and characters. There is no doubt that early fans will still have plenty to enjoy, especially since Russell T Davies has found a good balance between old and new in the four episodes already broadcast.
Disney+ is the new TARDIS
For the record, in France it is Disney+ which offers the new episodes almost simultaneously with BBC. The service is already broadcasting the three special episodes designed for the 60th anniversary of the series, with the returns of David Tennant and Catherine Tate in particular. Still on the returns side, after several years of absence, a traditional special Christmas episode is also available. This one is essential since it officially launches this new iteration of the Doctor and his companion Ruby.
