In early October 2022, doctors mistakenly announced to a mother-to-be that her baby had died in her womb. After a new examination, they discover that the child is alive.
It is a nightmare dreaded by any future parent: losing your baby during pregnancy. A terrible announcement that Hannah Cole, a 26-year-old British girl, received by mistake. Just 22 weeks pregnant, the mum-to-be was admitted to Bradford Royal Infirmary (BRI) after suffering unexpected bleeding. On the spot, the doctors made him pass a multitude of examinations but found no heartbeat. The next morning, the verdict falls: they announce to her the death of her future baby.
Interviewed by the British tabloid The Sunthe mother confided: “I was completely devastated when they broke the news to me. But deep down I knew he was still there…” Unable to believe the doctors’ revelation, the young mother chose to trust her instincts and demanded a second ultrasound. It was with surprise that they then discovered that her baby was actually still alive. “It was an emotional roller coaster for me. It’s completely insane”said the mother still in shock. “I don’t know how they could have been wrong. Hearing different things in the space of a week left me dumbfounded. It was very stressful but a relief when I was told everything was fine.”

An investigation has been opened
Following this terrible misadventure, Hannah is anxious to return for the continuation of her pregnancy at the Bradford Royal Infirmary (BRI) but, having no other hospital nearby, the young Englishwoman did not no other choice. “I’m not sure I’m going back to this hospital. I’m just wondering ‘how many times has this happened before?’ I want other women to be aware of what I went through. I want other women to be aware of this situation. I want to raise awareness.”she explained.
Despite everything, the mother-to-be is impatient at the idea of welcoming her little warrior who should not be long in pointing the tip of his nose. Sarah Hollins, Director of Midwifery at Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, presented his “sincere apologies” to Hannah, telling her that she would receive the best care for the rest of her pregnancy. In order to determine the causes of this error and not to reproduce it, an investigation was opened within the hospital.
