Documentary series »A Planet Before Time«

The idea of how dinosaurs lived and died is always changing. While they were still considered solitary giant lizards with pea brains when they were discovered in the 19th century, some of them acquired the notorious Tyrannosaurus rex later – not least through blockbusters like “Jurassic Park” – a reputation as fearsome hunters.

Today, science mainly assumes that many dinosaurs resembled birds, lived in social groups and, in some cases, took intensive care of their offspring. Perhaps he did the latter T. rexas researchers at the University of the Japanese Prefecture of Fukui found out as part of a study in 2021 – and what was shown in advance in the trailer for the new documentary series “Prehistoric Planet” from Apple TV+.

Even before the five episodes were broadcast, it became apparent that the producers wanted to show life 66 million years ago at a more scientifically accurate level than other productions. A well-known team was hired for this: the producers Jon Favreau and Mike Gunton, already known from nature documentaries, the BBC Studios Natural History Unit (responsible for the documentary »Planet Earth« among other things) and the naturalist and author David Attenborough as speaker.
