Doliprane is a medication consisting exclusively of paracetamol, it helps relieve low to medium intensity pain. Doliprane codeine contains paracetamol and an morphine derivative, codeine. It is used to treat pain that is not relieved by paracetamol alone.
1. What is Doliprane?
Doliprane is an analgesic medication composed of an active substance called paracetamol. This medication exists in several dosages, suitable for children, adolescents and adults. Doliprane is one of the most prescribed drugs in France, considered a reference analgesic drug. However, its overdose can lead to very serious damage to the liver, as specified by the National Agency for the Safety of Medicines and Health Products (ANSM) in his press release “Proper use of paracetamol and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs): the ANSM wants to strengthen the advisory role of the pharmacist.”
2. What is Doliprane codein?
Doliprane codeine is a specialty medicine composed of paracetamol and codeine phosphate. It is also called Codoliprane. Codeine is an opioid derivative and a powerful level 2 analgesic. Doliprane codeine is a medication used to treat moderate to severe pain. This medication exists in different dosages: in the form of 400 mg of paracetamol for 20 mg of codeine, or in the form of 500 mg of paracetamol and 30 mg of codeine, as specified by the High Authority for Health (HAS). Doliprane codeine is a medicine intended for adults. Codeine is not recommended in children under 12 years of age (particularly in the case of tonsillectomy), and it must be used in very specific cases in children over 12 years of age, as specified by the HAS.
3. What are the differences between Doliprane and Doliprane codein?
Doliprane and Doliprane codeine are two analgesic medications. However, Doliprane only contains paracetamol, while Doliprane codeine also contains codeine. While Doliprane can be used in children or adults (in appropriate dosages), Doliprane codeine can generally only be used in adults. In addition, Doliprane codeine is only available on medical prescription. Indeed, Doliprane codeine includes a morphine derivative: it can induce serious side effects in certain cases (in cases of severe liver failure, in cases of serious respiratory problems, or even if the person is a rapid metabolizer), or a risk of physical and psychological dependence, for example. The medicine is therefore reserved for the treatment of severe pain which is not relieved by Doliprane. Unlike Doliprane, Doliprane codeine cannot be used in breastfeeding women.
