Before Whitney Houston, Elvis was supposed to cover the song "I Will Always Love You" by Dolly Parton. However, the deal never materialized.

Whitney Houston (1963-2012) landed an absolute mega-hit in the 1990s with the song "I Will Always Love You" from the soundtrack of the film "Bodyguard". The song does not come from her at all and is just a cover version of a song of the same name by Dolly Parton (74). In an interview with the British street newspaper "The Big Issue", the US country legend said that the "King of Rock 'n' Roll" actually wanted to cover the song himself before, but it never got around to it.

"I know who I am. I know what I am not. I know what I can and cannot do," says Parton. Therefore she does not concern herself with things that are not convenient for her. Likewise, there is nothing stopping her from doing the things she wants to do. This firm belief in her principles also screwed up a deal with Elvis Presley (1935-1977) for her – because she refused to let the King record a cover of "I Will Always Love You". She was invited to his studio, where she heard Elvis' version. It was one of the most exciting situations she has ever experienced, because who doesn't love Elvis?

"Well it's not my rule"

However, Presley's manager Tom Parker (1909-1997) later called her and asked if she knew that Elvis and his team owned at least half the rights to every song he recorded. "And I said no, I didn't know that," Parton continues. "That's just a rule," Parker said. "Well, it's not my rule," she replied. The singer cried "all night" after her decision. "It wasn't Elvis, I loved Elvis."

Presley must have been disappointed too, since everything was already prepared. "I know he loved the song," Parton is sure. Elvis' ex-wife Priscilla Presley (75) said that. He even sang the song after the two walked down the steps of the courthouse after their divorce, which Parton "really touched".
