Domestic violence: Riester denounces the “bad solution” of specialized courts

The Assembly voted at first reading a bill by deputy LR Aurélien Pradié, creating a court specializing in domestic violence.

This is not a gift to this great cause“: the Minister for Relations with Parliament denounced this Friday the vote the day before, against the opinion of the government, of the LR bill creating a court specializing in domestic violence.

We can clearly see that it was Aurélien Pradié’s desire to have a victory in the context of the campaign for the presidency of LR, to the detriment of the substance and to the detriment of the cause of intra-family violence“, lamented the minister on Sud-Radio, about one of the three candidates for the presidency of the party Les Républicains whose first round of the election is scheduled for this weekend. The National Assembly adopted by 41 votes against 40 Thursday evening the bill tabled by the young deputy LR as part of the parliamentary niche of his group.

“When the opposition comes together, well, we are beaten”.

It’s a real problem and it’s a bad solution because it would alienate the courts, that is to say the magistrates and the justice system, from the victims.“, argued Mr. Riester, defending Emmanuel Macron’s position of favoring specialized magistrates within existing jurisdictions. But, he recalled, the government has a relative majority: “when the opposition gathers, well we are beaten“. Beyond that, he explained that if the ranks of the presidential majority were sparse at the time of the vote on this text, it was because it was not possible to ask “to the deputies, even if they belong to the majority, to be 100% permanently present in the hemicycle“.

We must work on the means given to MPs to work more easily“, estimated Franck Riester, judging that”we ask a lot in terms of presence of deputies (…), in session, and also in committee“. “And the French want to see them also on the pitch to stay in touch“, he observed. Adopted at first reading, the proposal will now be sent to the Senate, with a right-wing majority.
