In October 2020, actor Dominic West (54) made headlines with a public flirtation with co-star Lily James (35). The two were spotted together in Rome and even kissed. The catch: West has been married to Catherine FitzGerald (52) since 2010, with whom he shares four children. Just days after kissing James, West and his wife appeared to the press outside their home holding a note that read, “Our marriage is strong and we are still together. Thank you.” into the cameras. Now the actor has spoken publicly for the first time about how his wife reacted to the kissing scandal.

It was an “extremely stressful” situation for Fitzgerald and their children, says West in an interview with The Sunday Times. He didn’t want to speak on behalf of his wife, “because of course it was terrible, especially for her.” West also doesn’t want to go into the exact background. It was an “absurd” situation, says the actor.
Nevertheless, the scandal made them both stronger. Now they would even joke about the situation every now and then. “Because whenever we went out together, the newspapers said we were putting on a ‘united front,'” said West. “Even if we’re just arguing about parking the car, even though that couldn’t be further from the truth. So when we go out we say, ‘Should we go and have a united front in London?'”
Scandal helped empathize with Prince Charles
The media hype surrounding the matter helped him prepare for his portrayal of Prince Charles in the last two seasons of the Netflix series “The Crown”. “I had a very clear idea of what it was like to have your name or photo appear in the newspapers,” says West.
“There’s that terrible moment where you freeze when something is revealed about you. I think everyone can understand how that feels,” the actor continues. “But I had experienced this a few years before and that must have influenced how I approached it. That feeling of horror is something you don’t get used to.”
