Special investigator Jack Smith (54), employed by the US Department of Justice, had proposed that the trial in Washington against ex-President Donald Trump (77) begin in January 2024. His legal counsel is now trying to move the start of the trial to a date after the next presidential election on November 5, 2024.

1.5 million pages of court files

As reported by the Washington Post, his lawyers complain in their application that if the trial begins next year, they will not have enough time to view all the procedural documents submitted by the prosecutor and to prepare for the defense. The material provided comprises around 1.5 million pages. To illustrate, they attached a graphic to the application that visualizes that all the documents would result in a stack of paper that would even tower above the Statue of Liberty in New York. A thorough examination of the document could take years. They said: “The public has an interest in justice and a fair trial, not in a hasty judgement.”

The responsible judge Tanya Chutkan (61) had scheduled a hearing for August 28 to set the start date of the process and asked both sides to submit proposals. The trial concerns Trump’s alleged attempt at voter fraud in the last 2020 election and his role in the storming of Washington’s Capitol by fanatical supporters in January 2021.

Further court cases are pending

Trump is the first US ex-president to face criminal charges. In addition to the trial in Washington, three other court cases are pending in Georgia, New York and Miami, which are said to deal with, among other things, the storage of secret government documents in Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence and the payment of hush money to a former porn actress.
