Is Donald Trump complicit in the "Day of Shame" on January 6th? The US Senate missed the necessary two-thirds majority for this.

The US Senate has acquitted the former US President Donald Trump (74) of the charge of "inciting a riot". This means that he has survived the subsequent impeachment proceedings without any damage and will be allowed to hold political offices in the future – including that of the US President. After the acquittal, Trump announced, according to the Washington Post, that he "still has a lot to do in this regard."

The acquittal took place because the two-thirds majority required for impeachment was just missed. 67 votes would have been necessary for this, 57 were in the end. 50 Democrats and 7 Republicans had found Trump guilty of being responsible for the storming of the Capitol on January 6th by fanatical supporters of the then US President. Trump is the only US president against whom two impeachment proceedings have been launched.

The US Democrats are horrified by the acquittal, seeing it as "irrefutable" that Trump was largely to blame for the "day of shame" in which five people lost their lives. Mitch McConnell (78), the Republican minority leader in the Senate, emphasized that Trump could still be prosecuted as a private person in a criminal court.
