Donald Trump will not appear at Joe Biden's inauguration. The outgoing US President announced this via Twitter.

Now it is certain: The incumbent US President Donald Trump (74) is breaking with American tradition and will not take part in the inauguration of his successor Joe Biden (78). He announced this via Twitter: "To everyone who asked: I will not go to the inauguration on January 20th." His chosen successor will be sworn in as the 46th President of the United States of America that day.

In the past few days and weeks there has been repeated speculation about how Trump will behave in the course of the handover. After the riots in Washington and the Capitol storm there, Trump declared for the first time that there would be "a new government". He wants to enable a "smooth, orderly and seamless" transfer of power and is now focusing on this in the last days of his term in office.

Although he helped to trigger the storm on the Capitol with his statements, Trump condemned the protesters' actions and spoke of a "desecration" of the Capitol. Anyone who broke the law would pay their price. He called for "reconciliation" and "healing" of the people.
