WASHINGTON, Oct 21 (Reuters) – The U.S. House of Representatives committee investigating the January 6, 2021 assault by Donald Trump supporters on the Capitol on Friday sent a subpoena to the former US President.
Donald Trump will have to submit documents to the commission and testify under oath on the events of January 6, which aimed to prevent Congress from certifying the victory of Joe Biden in the presidential election.
Under federal law, refusing to respond to a congressional subpoena is punishable by one to 12 months in prison, but requires a prior vote of the House of Representatives to forward the case to the Justice Department. .
The commission of inquiry requires Donald Trump to hand over the requested documents by November 4, and to appear before November 14.
