Donges, this municipality which places the RN in the lead in a region which votes for Emmanuel Macron

In the west, we voted mainly for Emmanuel Macron during the second round: 84% in Rennes or 81% in Nantes. Yet in Donges, in Loire-Atlantique, Marine Le Pen obtained 54% of the vote. A historic first for this working-class city rather anchored on the left.

Even more surprising: the candidate of the National Rally was already in the lead during the first round in this city located between Nantes and Saint-Nazaire.

With this extreme vote, the inhabitants seem to express their disappointment with Emmanuel Macron’s first five-year term. In the streets of Donges, some refer to the latter as the president “of the rich”. “I have 1,000 euros in retirement per month, I can’t do it”, justifies a Dongeoise.

François Cheneau, the city’s unregistered mayor, believes that soaring fuel prices motivated this protest vote. “Here we don’t have suitable public transport to go to work far away at low cost. We have to take our car, when we are in a couple we have two cars and therefore we have double trouble”, he develops.

With the victory of Emmanuel Macron this Sunday, April 24, François Cheneau fears that the opposition of his constituents will be expressed in a more concrete way. At the time of the yellow vests, some residents of Donges had already mobilized to protest against government policy.
