This year, Apple’s event was focused on ecology. Wanting to be a good student, the apple brand announced the end of its leather cases for iPhone in favor of a new fine woven material. Problem, the quality is not at all there, according to the first users.

The company was keen to reinforce its commitment to carbon neutrality, and presented its very first completely neutral product: the Apple Watch Series 9. Due to “ significant carbon footprint » of its leather cases, Apple has also made the decision to replace this alternative with another material. This last ” is made from 68% post-consumer recycled content and significantly reduces carbon emissions compared to leather », assures the company.

The first opinions are categorical

If the approach of the Cupertino company is commendable, the result must still follow, especially if the new shell is offered at the same price as the old one. On Reddit or X.com (formerly Twitter), the first opinions on the famous case are almost unanimous: its quality is much worse than that of its predecessor, for a similar price.

After holding it in hand, it feels more like a cheap $10 case from Amazon than a quality Apple case, especially at this price », deplores an Internet user on the forum of MacRumors. “ The case itself is nice, but I’m not sure the high price is worth it. Leather cases are so much nicer. I’m all for Mother Nature, but when it comes to value for money, the finely woven case doesn’t cut it.”writes another.

The quality/price ratio is bad

Consumers particularly deplore the permanent scratches which appear very quickly on the fabric. However, Apple did not lie about the merchandise: “ The finely woven material may show signs of wear over time. Light imprints will appear upon contact with MagSafe accessories. If this is a concern for you, we recommend using a silicone case or a transparent iPhone 15 Pro case », Writes the company on its site. However, it does not specify that these traces may appear from the first uses.

People who have ordered the case mainly complain about the high price of it, which does not really correspond to its real value. Fine weaving is also offered for AirTag cases at 35 euros, and for MagSafe wallets. This is also a new band option, at $99, for the Apple Watch.
