“Don’t take off your t-shirts”: the Ken auditioned for Barbie went directly bare-chested!

The Ken auditioned for Barbie received an amazing instruction! Explanations.

With its 4 million admissions in France alone, Barbie is already a huge success. In this context of Barbie Mania, we continue to discover little by little manufacturing secrets on the film, and this one is rather crisp.

Motion Pictures website uploaded an interview with two of the casting executives, Allison Jones and Lucy Bevan, who shared some anecdotes about how the casting went.

As the story goes IndieWire which relays excerpts from this interview, very famous actresses and actors have sent videos to participate in the casting. They had in their possession a few pages of dialogue and then had to send a “self tape“, ie a video where they film themselves playing the sequence in question.

It is in this context that an instruction had to be given, due to unexpected behavior for this kind of exercise! “Some of the Kens would take off their T-Shirts, and we had to say, “No, no, you don’t have to take your T-Shirts off.”. And to add:Some of the scenes to pass the auditions are played out on the thread of comedy and the sincerity of the characters. You have to find the right balance. Simu Liu found the right tone.”

The two casting managers point out that director Greta Gerwig spent a lot of time considering the proposals. Since everyone was playing Ken and Barbie, it was a question of finding the right Ken and the right Barbie for the different roles. According to them, Greta Gerwig was particularly enthusiastic about the proposals of Simu Liu and Issa Rae. “The thing Greta insisted on a lot was not being sarcastic or winking at the camera. They had to be Kens and Barbies”.

Released in France on July 19, Barbie is the hit of the summer with Oppenheimer. The two films, nicknamed “Barbenheimer” have been at the top of the box office for a month.
