Motion Pictures website uploaded an interview with two of the casting executives, Allison Jones and Lucy Bevan, who shared some anecdotes about how the casting went.
As the story goes IndieWire which relays excerpts from this interview, very famous actresses and actors have sent videos to participate in the casting. They had in their possession a few pages of dialogue and then had to send a “self tape“, ie a video where they film themselves playing the sequence in question.
It is in this context that an instruction had to be given, due to unexpected behavior for this kind of exercise! “Some of the Kens would take off their T-Shirts, and we had to say, “No, no, you don’t have to take your T-Shirts off.”. The two casting managers point out that director Greta Gerwig spent a lot of time considering the proposals. Since everyone was playing Ken and Barbie, it was a question of finding the right Ken and the right Barbie for the different roles. According to them, Greta Gerwig was particularly enthusiastic about the proposals of Simu Liu and Issa Rae. “The thing Greta insisted on a lot was not being sarcastic or winking at the camera.
