don’t throw away your eggshells, they can be very useful!

fun, news, tips… what else?

They can be used for many everyday gestures whether in your garden or in your home.

Each year, we consume 220 eggs per person. It is an essential product in our diet, whether for our pie or cake recipes, but also for simply eating a tasty omelette. It is also the best source of protein possible. To eat eggs, you obviously have to remove the shells. However, these envelopes, composed of 95% minerals (calcium and magnesium carbonates and phosphates), can be very useful to us at home and in the garden. Here are some good reasons not to put them in the trash!

The first and most common use is to add the shells to your compost. Remember, however, to crumble them beforehand to accelerate their decomposition. But if you don’t have compost and have a garden, don’t hesitate to plant a few pieces of eggshell at the base of your ornamental plants or your houseplants. You can also start preparing a special natural fertilizer for orchids by mixing eggshells and rainwater in a plastic bottle. Don’t forget to regularly add water as well as new shells. Planting the shells in the bottom of the holes in your tomato plants also allows you to avoid diseases such as blossom end rot. Also good to know, if you distribute a few broken shells around your plants, you can also naturally limit the presence of slugs or snails in your garden (they will indeed hinder their movement).

Useful for household chores

Finally, the shells can be useful within our home. Thanks to their abrasive aspect, eggshells can help you scour your pan bottoms where food remains firmly attached. To do this, grind your shells using an immersion blender, an electric chopper (you sharpen the blades of your device at the same time) or a coffee grinder to reduce them to powder. Then rub your dishes using a sponge with a little soapy water. The shells are also effective in making your laundry even whiter than before. All you have to do is place a net containing a few shells and a slice of lemon in the drum of your machine.
