Dordogne: a donkey killed by dogs, its owners accuse the hunters

A Montignac duty veterinarian identified the characteristics of a dog attack. The gendarmes of Terrasson also came to note the facts. The mayor of Aubas, Valène Dupuy, moved and was able to see the mutilated corpse. Since the events, the colt baptized Sautillon is traumatized and hides behind the survivors: his father Pollux and Pomme, a donkey from Poitou.

There was still a lot of emotion, Sunday, February 13, at the Cousins. Father Patrick is a committed ecologist but assures us that he “wants to maintain good relations with hunters”. He recalls that he, “according to the Verdeille law, was able to prohibit hunting on the property, because it exceeds 20 hectares”. He denounces hunting as it is practiced by some, “with big 4 X 4s, tracers on the dogs and big packs sometimes coming from other municipalities”. He accuses them of surrounding his property and throwing their dogs there to bring out the animals that have taken refuge there.

Son Pierre, who discovered the dead animal around 10:30 a.m., was both devastated and furious. He thinks the mother wanted to defend her colt and lured the dogs out of the paddock where she was with two other donkeys. Pierre Cousin filmed the hunters stationed around the property with a drone: “I gave these images to the gendarmes. “And he had a virulent telephone exchange with the president of one of the three local hunting societies which operated that morning, whom he accuses of practicing “a real hunt with hounds”.

The president of the Muguet society, Denis Rouvès, who led the hunt on Saturday, defends himself: “We were hunting deer and not on that side. We have GPS tracks. If our dogs were responsible, we would have found blood on them. Our little beagles wouldn’t have attacked a donkey. But he explains that there were other invited hunters, who came with their “specialized” dogs. “The discussion was impossible with the Cousin family. But we will take full responsibility if we can prove that it was our dogs who did it. There are also stray dogs in the town. »

On the Cousin family's 40-hectare property, it is clearly indicated that hunting is prohibited.
