Dordogne: We have seen it, what you need to know about the attractive production of Un Je Ne Sais Quoi and Umanimation

Announced in 2020 and featured in one of our AG French Direct, Dordogne, by the Girondin studios UN Je Ne Sais Quoi and Umanimation, was present at Gamescom. The opportunity to test the prototype that allowed the software to be published by Focus Entertainment, and to discuss with Aymeric Castaing – Umanimation – present on site. Here is what you need to know about this very catchy French title.

Between past and present

The first thing to know about the title of Un Je Ne Sais Quoi and Umanimation is that it will allow us to take on the role of Mimi, 32 years old. Having lost her grandmother, our young woman tidies up her country house, and finds memories of her childhood there.. Thus, we will take control of Mimi, 10 years old, who will have to find these happy memories, and thus paste them directly on her notebook.

On this starting pitch, we will most certainly find a moving and poetic aspect, which will take us on a journey to various French regions. Because in fact the Dordogne will be a big mix of different French panoramas including a certain Sarlat market, which we will be able to cross in one of the chapters. This trip promises to be a breath of fresh air, which could do a world of good for the video game industry.

In any case, the little we have seen is promising, like the story, which promises to be captivating. The game session that we tested put us in the shoes of 10-year-old Mimi, who notably walked around her grandmother’s house, as well as in one of the striking settings of Dordogne. You will have to browse the many paintings, collect some memories there by taking pictures or recording the sound of nature, then choose them and stick them on your notebook. Small mini-games will also be there to recover said memories, such as light a candle with a match by successfully performing a few manipulations via the joystick of the controller.

This is a tiny part of what Dordogne will probably have to offer us. It’s a safe bet that the game will be globally accessible, while offering us an exemplary narration. We have reservations on the potential repetitiveness of situations in Dordognebut this will necessarily have to be checked on the final game. It should be noted that there will also be sequences with Mimi, 32 years oldand it is hoped that this passage from the past to the present will be successful or even interesting in practice.

A living painting of interactivity, and an animated short film to come

Dordogne 3 2

Of course, you should know that the artistic direction of Dordogne will be as special as it is hypnotizing. The title of Un Je Ne Sais Quoi and Umanimation studios is heading towards an aesthetic totally hand-painted in watercolor style, for a result that is quite striking for the moment, going off the beaten track. The finished work is therefore titanic, especially since according to Aymeric Castaing, most artists who are mainly in 3D had to be trained to develop this really grandiose hand-drawn skin.

Other interesting info on Dordogne : the title will even be entitled to a prequel in the form of an animated short film. We don’t actually know when it will be released, but know that he will in any case follow the path of Mimi’s grandmother, just to complete the loop of the franchise. What’s more, the animated short will also have the same aesthetic, just to stick with Dordogne.

All in all, this is exciting. Know that the game will be published by Focus Entertainment – publisher of licenses like The Surge and soon Atlas Fallen. It’s a partnership that has undeniably given more resources to the studio, which recently grew to just over 32 people. This leaves us with the hope of having a fine-tuned and above all quality game.

That’s all you need to know about Dordogne for now. Note that the title expected to arrive next year on virtually all platforms including PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Switch.
