Married couples will soon have more freedom in choosing their last names. There should also be more options for children – regardless of the marital status of their parents. Our interactive tool reveals all the options you might have when choosing your family name in the future.
Tomorrow, Thursday, the National Council will discuss the reintroduction of double names. Both fiancées should be able to decide individually which name variant they want to have. The Council of States is expected to discuss this in the summer. If everything goes smoothly, the law should come into force in 2025.
Check with your name which combinations would be allowed:
Double names should also now be possible for children – regardless of their parents’ marital status. All children of a couple must have the same last name. If married parents have decided on a common family name, this is automatically also the child’s last name.
Things get more complicated when two partners with double names meet. One thing is clear: a maximum of two names should be possible, which are made up of the existing names of the fiancée. The exact implementation still leaves questions unanswered, but theoretically the following combinations are possible in our example:
First the law has to make it through the two councils, nothing is settled yet.
