A bright double rainbow caused a sensation in the Lenzburg AG area on Friday evening. Reader reporter David Badri (44): “I’ve never seen anything like it in my life.” It rained very little, according to the eyewitness. It also didn’t hail. “Suddenly the rainbow was just there.”
Laura Barraco (16) was traveling between Othmarsingen and Dottikon. «I was surprised how strong the rainbow shone. That was a perfect end to the day. “
Urs Lüscher (35) observed the spectacle from Villmergen: “I hope this is a good omen for nice weather,” he says. Apparently the phenomenon could be observed as far as the canton of Zurich – a reader reporter also sent in a photo of the double rainbow from Dietikon.
This is how the phenomenon comes about
A rainbow is created when there are a particularly large number of small water droplets in the air, which break the sunlight like a prism when entering and exiting the droplets. This phenomenon is also called “dispersion”. The arrangement of the colors in the rainbow is always the same: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and purple.
Double rainbows are a very rare phenomenon. It occurs when two rain showers with different droplet sizes mix. (noo)
