The perfumery chain Douglas has announced that it will close several branches. In Germany, 60 locations are about to be closed – the employees are becoming unemployed.

Douglas has firmly integrated itself into the image of every German shopping street over the past few decades. For most people, perfumery has become an indispensable part of the shopping mile in the city center – until now. Because the company has announced that it intends to close 60 locations in Germany.

Douglas wants to use it to move business to online retail more quickly, reports RTL. First of all, however, the decision will result in the acute unemployment of many employees. 600 of the 5,200 employees across Germany are said to lose their jobs due to the restructuring.

However, the background for the store closings should not only be the cosmetics company's new online strategy, but also a reaction to the corona pandemic. In the summer, after the first lockdown, Douglas reported to RTL that it was analyzing its corporate strategy due to the "changed market environment". The decision to close several locations should now be one of the results. Douglas has been struggling with competition on the Internet for some time now, and the coronavirus pandemic has caused retailers to close again and again – and customers were forced to switch to online retail.
