Dr. Barbara Sturm is the celebrity skincare expert. We met her for an interview and she revealed the secret of all secrets for us: that of perfect skin.

We all want it – perfect skin. And that every day and every night. Skin specialist Dr. Barbara Sturm asked in an interview.

It seems that everyone who has something to do with skin care, skin treatments and the like has already achieved what we all want. Pure coincidence, luck or a clever skincare plan? “Good skin is healthy skin. If the skin is in balance and the skin barrier is well moisturized, then it looks good. As soon as we intervene, it can become a problem,” says Dr. Barbara Sturm. Disruptive factors can be, for example, diet, sun, air pollution, bluelight, stress, hormones or the wrong products.

“I don’t want to say that I always have good skin. When I was 30, I also had a lot of problems,” says Sturm. “In the case of deposits and blackheads, I would always go to a treatment first and have it cleaned out. But you actually want to balance your skin in such a way that you can no longer get it.” So that means: We have to bring our skin to the “normal state” and then maintain the standard with the right care routine.

Of course, it is not that easy to find out what the skin actually needs and which products work. However, there is one thing we all need: moisture. It’s like a kind of basic need of our skin. “You think you have to dry out oily skin, but that boosts sebum production even more. A hyaluronic acid serum, for example, is totally good for every skin type , a richer one for dry skin, “advises Dr. Barbara Sturm.

What the expert advises against might surprise some: Retinol. “I’m not at all for all of these trending stories,” she says.

Retinol is an absolute no-go.

“Retinol causes an inflammatory reaction and damages the skin barrier. It makes the skin sensitive and in case of doubt creates impurities because bacteria can get into the skin through the irritated skin barrier,” explains the expert. Retinol can make sense in aging skin, but the best way is to stimulate cell renewal in a way other than through damage. “Heal and repair instead of damage and repair” is Sturm’s motto.

According to the expert, a better alternative are products that activate temolerase. Telomerase is an enzyme that counteracts the shortening of the chromosome ends (telomeres) during cell division. The longer our temolere, the younger we feel and look, too. The antioxidant Purslane, for example, is included in their own product line and strengthens the regenerative power of cells. From their point of view, the skincare trend is going from anti-aging to anti-inflammation – i.e. anti-inflammatory.

Everyone has to decide for themselves which products we use for ourselves and what works. There is no such thing as a single timetable for perfect skin. There is only one conscious approach to our skin. And we should all look after it.
