Dragon Ball Z: what do the names of the villains of the animated series mean?

The villains of the animated series “Dragon Ball Z” have been remembered by many viewers, but do you know the meaning of the names Frieza, Cell and Boo?

We knew the meaning of the names of the main heroes of the animated series Dragon Ball Z, adapted from the eponymous manga by Akira Toriyama (42 volumes published by Glénat). And in particular the Saiyan warriors – Goku and Vegeta in the lead – whose origin of names refers to those… of vegetables!

The attribution of the names of the main villains of the series also has a particular history. Was the mangaka inspired by food to name his antagonists? Discover the story behind the names Frieza, Cell and Boo!

The Evil Emperor is a being endowed with transformations; the name of his race is not indicated in the manga, nor his planet of origin. We know, however, that the appearance of the character was inspired in Akira Toriyama by his editorial manager Yū Kondō (a tradition, initiated in his previous manga Dr. Slump, which the author will perpetuate for the following villains of the series).

The translation of the English name Frieza is almost literal; his surname indeed means in the freezer, because all the members of his species bear names referring to the cold. This is the case of his father King Cold, his brother Cooler (appeared in several non-canon films) but also a distant ancestor Chilled (appeared in the OVA Episode of Bardock).

Cell

Creation of Doctor Gero, Cell is an android designed from DNA samples of Son Goku, Vegeta, Piccolo or Frieza; thus, it benefits from the capacities specific to the Saiyan races (improvement of power over the course of combat), Namek (regeneration) and that of Frieza (capacity for survival in space and transformations).

Its name is therefore a direct reference to its artificial origins; the word “Cell” translates to English as “Cells”, and more specifically to the DNA cells incorporated into his engineered bio-humanoid organism for the purpose of creating the perfect being.

However, one would have thought that his name would have been chosen because of his appearance as a giant praying mantis…

Of the three main villains of Dragon Ball Z, Boo – also called Majin Buu, or Boubou in the French versfion – is the one whose name has the funniest story. To better understand the meaning of his surname, it is necessary to make a brief reminder of the origins of the character.

An ancestral demon feared by all, including his master Bibidi, he is locked up for centuries in a magical cocoon. He will finally be freed from it only by Babidi, the son of Bibidi, thanks to the combative energy stolen from the most powerful warriors on the planet: Goku, Vegeta, Gohan…

Boo’s name alone doesn’t mean much. But by juxtaposing the three names Bibidi Babidi Boo, we then obtain the famous formula pronounced by the magic fairy in the animated film Cinderella. From Disney to the Dragon Ball universe, there is only one step!
