Draw for the 2022 World Cup: find exclusive interviews with Deschamps and Le Graët

The French football team, reigning world champions, inherited a seemingly lenient group D in the first round of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, with Denmark, Tunisia and the winner of the play-off between Peru, Australia and the United Arab Emirates, according to the draw made on Friday in Doha.

Should we fear Denmark?

Luck smiled on him again. Didier Deschamps was at the microphone of Cyrille de la Morinerie exclusively for Europe 1 from Qatar on Friday evening, after the draw. Neither satisfied nor worried, he waits to know the winner of the jump-off. “There is still an unknown,” he says.

But it is perhaps Denmark, ranked 11th in the FIFA rankings, who is the most feared opponent by the coach. “It’s not necessarily a country that inspires difficulties like Germany or the Netherlands could be, but it is a semi-finalist of the Euro,” he says.

“You always have to be careful”

“You know football, when you say ‘we are going to win’, you always have to be extremely careful”, assures Noël Le Graët. “Denmark, we played them, it’s always very tight.”

Regarding the Tunisian team, the president of the French Football Federation also prefers to remain cautious. “Tunisia is making huge progress, I have the chance to go to Tunisia from time to time and I can tell you that football there is almost like a religion,” he confides.

“An ideal place”

To be the best, the Blues obviously need to recharge their batteries. For this 2022 World Cup, Noël Le Graët assures him, the base camp is an “ideal place”. “It’s a comfortable hotel, like all the hotels here. Not too big, so it’s going to be privatized and there’s greenery all around, it’s beautiful. There’s even water. “Training is very close. We are 10 minutes from a quality training ground of an L1 club. And then, we are also very close to any stadium”, he explains.
