Attention learner drivers! Changes for the theory test come into effect this month. But it’s not just there that things are changing: the practical driving exercises should also be more up-to-date.

Anyone who is still learning with old driving school documents for the theoretical driving test could experience a nasty surprise on the day of the test. Because from October 1st, candidates will have to reckon with new and partially revised questions. The legislature already passed the corresponding adjustment in April.

The new questions are divided into the driving license classes as follows:

  • 16 new basic knowledge questions for all classes
  • 5 new questions in moped basic knowledge
  • 11 new questions in Class A
  • 3 new questions in Class AM
  • 21 new questions in Class B
  • 14 new questions in Class C
  • 12 new questions in Class D
  • 4 new question in classes L and T

With the adjustments the Driver training made more contemporary will. The rapid technological advances in the automotive industry ensure that learner drivers become familiar with the relevant systems and functions need to be prepared safely for road traffic.

Digitization is progressing

Digitization is also progressing in the transport sector. With the beginning of the corona pandemic, driving schools already started with the Lessons via webcam. This should continue to be possible in the future. This emerges from a decision by the Federal Council, which now has to be approved by the government.

But not only the type of teaching should be updated. Already since June 1st of this year, learner drivers have had to demonstrate how to use modern driver assistance systems in the practical test. First of all, these are common systems such as cruise control. In the future, the operation of other assistance systems will also be proven in the test in order to prepare learner drivers as best as possible for dealing with motor vehicles on the road.

Automatic driving license obsolete

Previously, anyone who took the driver’s license test in a car with an automatic transmission was only allowed to drive such automatic cars. But that changed on April 1, 2022. Now only extra training hours are required to turn the automatic driver’s license into a driver’s license for cars with manual transmission. Ten additional driving hours and a 15-minute test drive are necessary for this. Persons with an automatic driver’s license issued before April 1st can do the extra units retrospectively.

This is the federal government’s reaction to the change in mobility. More and more vehicles with automatic transmissions are on German roads. One reason for this is certainly the advancing electrification and the associated, steadily growing number of e-cars.

Accompanying driving and more weight

In addition, the traffic light coalition is in favor of lowering the age for accompanying driving. So far, 17-year-olds with the appropriate driving license can drive cars in the presence of selected companions. Since the accident rate among novice drivers could be reduced with this regulation, the government would like that already at the age of 16 the driver’s license for accompanying driving can be completed. However, it is not yet clear when this will become law.

In addition, the Auto Club Europa (ACE) is in favor of increasing the permissible total weight for driving license category B. This demands instead of 3.5 tons, the future maximum permissible weight will be 4.25 tons. However, this should only go hand in hand with a speed limit for this vehicle class, as this can reduce the risk of accidents. However, there has not yet been a corresponding change from the Ministry of Transport.
