Driving a Ferrari Vision GT… for the price of a video game

Ferrari was one of the few supercar manufacturers that didn’t unveil a concept for the video game Gran Turismo, but here is this wrong repaired. On the occasion of the GT World Series Finals celebrations, Ferrari unveiled its own Vision Gran Turismo concept, in the form of a life-size model but above all in a virtual version, with a single-seater configuration and a hybrid V6 offering power and a trucking couple.

Freed from the laws of the real physical world, the designers at Maranello have let loose and come up with a more aggressively styled car than anything we’ve seen from the manufacturer so far.

The monstrously curved fenders contrast with the very single-seater front end and the stretched rear, both equipped with ultra-thin LED lighting units. Ground clearance is close to zero, with the massive splitter up front, the fins on the side sills and the rear diffuser almost touching the track. Other interesting details are the huge vents on the sides, and the large rear spoiler connected to the roof by a semi-transparent central fin. Finally, the wrap-around windshield covers the single-seat cockpit. The interior design is ultra-minimalist, with a paneled steering wheel incorporating a screen and a transparent dashboard.

The hypercar is a creation of Ferrari Centro Stile, led by Flavio Manzoni, which draws inspiration from iconic racing cars of the past, including the 330 P3 and 512 S. According to the official press release, the Vision GT is a “futuristic design manifesto for Ferrari’s road and racing cars” who “redefines the stylistic language of the brand“. It would therefore not be surprising to see in the years to come some virtual elements appearing on future productions, these being very real.

Unlike other Vision GT concepts from Porsche or Jaguar, which use all-electric powertrains, Ferrari opted for a hybrid setup closer to that used by its own production models. Here too, the prancing horse let loose by offering a centrally mounted 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 developing 1016 hp and 900 Nm of torque. This power is obtained thanks to a trio of electric motors placed in each of the front wheels and on the rear axle.

Engine power is transmitted through an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, while the addition of the electric motors provides all-wheel drive. Maranello estimates that such a powerful machine can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in less than 2 seconds, from 0 to 200 km/h in less than 5 seconds, and reach a top speed of over 350 km/h.

The carbon fiber chassis and suspension system could guarantee the handling to match the aesthetics. Ferrari announces a lap time of the Fiorano circuit of less than 1 min 10 s. For comparison, the flagship SF90 Stradale completed it in 1:19. Apart from the extra power, one reason for the difference is that the Vision GT’s dry weight is 1250kg, well below the SF90’s 1570kg.

The full-size model of the Ferrari Vision Gran Turismo concept will be on display at the Ferrari Museum in Maranello until March 2023. Playstation owners will have plenty of time to drive this Ferrari Vision GT and see how the car’s physics react in Gran Turismo 7 from December 23. Ideal for hours of driving in the middle of winter.
