  • The European Parliament has voted on reforming driving licenses.
  • The result: No EU-wide regulation for driving licenses with a limited validity. Member states decide for themselves.
  • In some countries such as Italy, the driving license already comes with an extension period.

On February 28th, the EU Parliament voted on whether the regulations for EU driving licenses should be reformed. Among other things, it was about whether drivers will have to regularly prove their health in the future in order to obtain an extension of the validity of their driving license.

The EU driving license, as it is now, has no expiry date. You can keep your driving license for life, provided that the country in which the driving license was issued has not made appropriate regulations and you do not have to give it up because of traffic offenses.

The new driving license regulations stipulated that drivers would have to undergo regular health tests in order to be able to keep their driving license. According to the result of the vote, there should be no EU-wide regulation in this regard – it is left to the member states themselves.

Driving licenses are already limited in some EU countries

Although there is no EU-wide regulation regarding the renewal of driving licenses, an extension deadline has been in effect in Italy for decades. In Italy, the driving license loses its validity ten years after it was first purchased and must be renewed. From the age of 50 it must be renewed every five years, from the age of 70 every three years and from the age of 80 every two years.

In addition, according to the SWR, driving licenses are also limited in other countries such as Switzerland, the Netherlands, Denmark, Spain, Portugal and the Czech Republic.
