drop of 18 cents per liter from April 1, here’s how to take advantage of it

In mid-March, the government announced a drop of 15 cents per liter of fuel, which will ultimately be 18 cents. At the same time, the TotalEnergies brand has decided to go further. Here’s how to take advantage of these discounts on fuel prices.

A device that will be good for the wallets of the French, and in particular of those obliged to take the car regularly, with an expected saving of 11 euros on a full 60 liters. From Friday April 1, the state will finance not a discount of 15 cents per liter of fuel as announced in mid-March, but 18 cents in mainland France according to the decree published on Saturday, and revealed Friday evening by The Parisian.

The initial announcement had been made excluding tax, underlines Bercy, questioned by the daily. You must then add any reductions in VAT which are different depending on whether you are in mainland France, Corsica or the overseas departments and territories, for example.

With the outbreak of war in Ukraine, prices rose by more than 10% within days, according to data provided by the government. If they have since fallen below the two euros per liter mark, according to official figures published on Monday March 21, prices are still likely to continue to strain household budgets.

How did it work?

From April 1, therefore, a liter of fuel will be 18 euro cents cheaper, and this in the 11,000 stations in France. Why this choice of a drop per liter rather than a fuel bonus for example? According to the Prime Minister’s Office, contact by The Parisian, this measure had the advantage of being able to be implemented quickly. Another advantage is that this measure allows for a more equitable distribution. A person filling up weekly will benefit more than someone filling up monthly.

In concrete terms, this reduction of 18 centimes per liter will be integrated into the price announced on the display panel at the entrance to the service station. Indeed, the government will apply the rebate upstream, to the central purchasing bodies which act as intermediaries between the oil companies and the distribution networks. The purchasing centers will receive the aid which they will then pass on directly to the service stations, explains Bercy, questioned by The Parisian. To ensure that this discount is properly applied, the fraud prevention services will carry out checks.

TotalEnergies also lowers costs

In addition to this measure, it is possible to obtain greater discounts. TotalEnergies has announced a reduction of 10 centimes per liter of fuel at all its stations from 1 April. In total, 28 cents reduction will therefore be applied by the group (18 cents from the state plus 10 cents from the brand). Do you want to know which station offers the best rates near you? There is a tool for this: the government site fuel-prices.gouv.frwhich publishes current rates.

An additional effort in the coming months?

On Tuesday, Jean Castex announced that he wanted to set up a more intensive system for two categories of our fellow citizens: those who drive a lot to work where, it would probably be necessary to go beyond 15 cents and a second entry key for those of our fellow citizens whose purchasing power, whose incomes are low, in other words a more targeted device for those who do not earn much and for those who drive a lot. A measure that depends on one thing, according to the Prime Minister: the re-election of candidate Emmanuel Macron.
