It was in the UK, in the county of Derbyshire, that tragedy struck. On October 25, 2021, a 38-year-old woman ran over her boyfriend after hitting him with her car for the first time. Under the influence of alcohol, she thought she had simply knocked over a traffic light.
Lucy Quirke had just spent the evening with her partner, John Wright, in a pub in Chesterfield when the accident happened. The 30-year-old, who had consumed at least four pints of beer, dropped Wright off at his house. CCTV footage from the evening of the crash shows the 27-year-old exiting the passenger side. He then drives past his girlfriend’s Vauxhall Corsa, just as she begins to drive forward.
“Help, help, he’s dead, he’s dead”
Afterwards, Quirke continues to maneuver, rolling over his unconscious boyfriend’s head until he finally realizes his mistake. According to several witnesses, the young woman then got out of her car. On discovering the body of her boyfriend, she would then have exclaimed “Help, help, he’s dead, he’s dead. I do not know what to do !“until it caught the attention of the neighborhood.
John Wright was rushed to hospital and died of his injuries. He suffered catastrophic head injuries, broken ribs and a lacerated liver. Lucy Quirke, whose blood alcohol level was twice the legal limit, was sentenced in December 2022 to 15 months in prison for reckless driving resulting in death. She was also given a two-year driving ban. In a letter she said “that she would take John’s place, if she could” and that she “would feel guilty until the end of his days.”
