Shiffrin wins crazy World Cup opener

What a drama: Mikaela Shiffrin from the USA and Lara Gut-Behrami from Switzerland have a crazy duel up to the last tenth of a second. The US-American finally wins the World Cup opener in alpine skiing, her 70th victory. Only one of the DSV runners made it to the final.

Mikaela Shiffrin celebrated her 70th World Cup victory at the season opener for female skiers in Sölden. The US-American prevailed in the giant slalom on the Rettenbach Glacier in fantastic conditions with 0.14 seconds ahead of world champion Lara Gut-Behrami (Switzerland).

Third place went to overall World Cup winner Petra Vlhova from Slovakia (1.30 seconds behind). Marlene Schmotz (Leitzachtal / + 4.32) came in 28th in her comeback race after tearing the cruciate ligament and inner ligament in her right knee, Andrea Filser (Wildsteig) had missed the final as 52nd in the first run.

“For me it is excellent that I even got into the second round and took a few points with me,” said Schmotz, who also achieved a “very valuable” third place on the grid for the DSV team. At the finish she hung her head because she had “not driven quite as consistently” on the steep slope. “That is always annoying at first, but now forgotten”, she said, her comeback was “definitely” a success.
