These two women don’t just share a love of music: Dua Lipa and Katy Perry also have a celebrity friendship.
As a child, Dua Lipa (28) was already a big fan of superstar Katy Perry (39). She is now a celebrated singer herself and her teenage dream has come true: she is in close contact with her idol.
“I’m friends with Katy”
In one Interview with Rolling Stone magazine The Grammy winner talked about what it felt like to become friends with Perry after crushing on her as a child – and even being able to dance with her on stage when she was 15. “I love Katy! I’m friends with Katy. I think she’s great,” the “Dance the Night” singer said.
It was a special moment when Katy Perry came to one of her concerts at the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles in 2018. “When she attended my show at the Palladium it brought me full circle because when I was 15 I went to see her at the Hammersmith Apollo in London.” Perry’s shows at the time included a segment in which she covered Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance with Somebody” and brought in audience members. The young Dua Lipa was among them at the time. “It was her California Dreams Tour and she brought fans on stage and I jumped on stage and danced,” the 28-year-old recalled. “There’s this embarrassing picture of me online.”
Today, Dua Lipa has gotten a lot closer to her idol and has also received the “I Kissed a Girl” singer’s seal of approval. “The nod from someone like her, someone I look up to, is really encouraging,” Lipa said.
Katy Perry realized early on that Dua Lipa was going to be a star
Perry, in turn, had last year in “Rolling Stone” emphasizes that she is a fan of her younger colleague and that she recognized her qualities early on. “I remember even rooting for Dua because I was like, ‘Oh, this girl is going to be the next big girl pop star. She’s the It girl and she’s coming,'” Perry said. She left her work in the TV studio early to watch Lipa’s show in 2018: “It was the first season that I appeared on ‘American Idol’. I thought, ‘I really have to get out of here at seven because I have this wants to see a new artist.'”
The 39-year-old gave her friend one important piece of advice early on: never look up her name on the Internet. “She said, ‘I did that early in my career, and I got upset about every tabloid that said something about me.’ She said, “Don’t turn on notifications. “Don’t read this because it will stop you from doing what you read,” Dua Lipa said in a previous interview with Elle magazine.
Their third album will be released on May 3rd
Dua Lipa obviously can’t be deterred: Last week she officially announced her third studio album “Radical Optimism”, which will be released on May 3rd. A friend introduced her to the concept of “radical optimism” years ago. “I became more curious as I started playing with it and incorporating it into my life,” she said in a statement about the album title. “It struck me – the idea of walking gracefully through chaos and feeling like you can weather any storm.”
