Duchess Catherine of Kent gave a rare interview a few days ago, with which she is currently making headlines in the British media.

Interviews from members of the royal families are rare. All the more surprising that Duchess Katharine von Kent, 89, has now met for a conversation with the British newspaper “The Telegraph”, in which she is surprisingly open.

“Only the headmaster knew who I was”

The self-proclaimed ‘Yorkshire lady’, who renounced her title ‘Her Royal Highness’ and retired from public life 20 years ago, reveals she spent over 13 years incognito as ‘Mrs Kent’ at Wansbeck Primary School in Hull taught music. “Only the principal knew who I was. The parents didn’t know and the students didn’t know. Nobody ever noticed. It wasn’t publicized at all – it just seemed to work,” reveals Katharine. “I don’t know why, but it just worked. I taught the kids from a young age until they finished elementary school.”

Queen Elizabeth, 96, has always supported her. “There was nothing I wanted to hide from,” she emphasizes. “It was just something that happened in my life. I was always – I wouldn’t say proud of it, but I was glad I did it. I was supported in that too. The Queen said, ‘Yes, go and do it and I did it.”

Duchess Catherine of Kent loves rap music

Speaking to The Telegraph, Prince Edward’s wife, Duke of Kent, 86, also talks about her love of music. “I’ll listen to everything,” says the 89-year-old when asked which artists and songs she knows. “I just love music. Something I hear on the radio – I don’t really listen to records. If it gets my feet tapping, I’m happy,” said the Duchess of Kent.

Although the Duchess admits she “didn’t know all the names” of the famous rappers of the time, she has a fondness for “Lose Yourself” singer Eminem, 49. “I even like beatboxing,” reveals Katharine.
