Allegedly, Duchess Meghan wanted to conduct a CBS interview in 2019, but couldn't get past the royal family.

The eagerly awaited TV interview by Oprah Winfrey (67) with Duchess Meghan (39) and Prince Harry (36) will be broadcast on CBS on Sunday. As the British "Daily Mail" reports, a conversation is said to have been planned for two years. Originally, however, the Duchess wanted to thread an interview with her friend, the CBS presenter Gayle King (66), right after the birth of her son Archie (1) in May 2019. However, the British royal family forbade that at the last minute.

The dispute at the time about the interview was a first sign of the cracks between Harry and Meghan and the palace, it is now said. The source also reports to the newspaper that Meghan wanted to manage her public image herself, apart from selected British media, to which you can give short statements as a member of the royal family. Since this dispute in 2019, conversations about a possible interview with the US broadcaster have never stopped.

CBS presenter was probably already in London

The royal family would never have agreed to such a public appearance on TV, as it does not correspond to the usual methodology of the court's PR machinery. She was expressly forbidden from all long interviews with US media about the birth of Archie. Harry and – probably above all – Meghan would have subsequently insisted on being able to freely choose both the topics they want to speak about publicly and the appropriate medium.

The CBS presenter King was already in London at that time to prepare film recordings with Harry, Meghan and Archie and to make them later. A 60-minute documentary was planned that should have shown the couple in a good light. Accompanying shooting with other interlocutors and commentators would even have already taken place. The upcoming Oprah interview is therefore a type of public relations work that was not only planned well in advance, but the couple has long wanted.
