The reason: A mountain lion is currently roaming through Montecito. Surveillance cameras captured images of the lion at a housing development just five miles from the royals’ home.
As “Daily Mail” reports, the Sussexes’ home in particular is a popular destination for the animal. Meghan and Harry own a small flock of chickens that could attract the mountain lion. “Chickens can be a quick and easy source of food for hunting animals, so they need to be safe and secure,” said Sharon Byrne, executive director of the Montecito Association. Residents should also secure their garbage cans and install surveillance cameras and night lighting.
Experts suspect that the roaming mountain lion has left its territory in search of food and water. The state of California is currently being hit by a persistent heat and associated drought.
