Buckingham Palace acted particularly quickly to immediately sack Lady Susan Hussey after the racist incident at an event. But critical voices regarding the decision are now also being raised from those around the Royals.

Even a few days after the racism scandal in the British royal family, there is a discussion about how it came about and how the difficult situation should be dealt with now.

Racist incident in the palace

Ngozi Fulani, director of east London-based charity Sistah Space, was also present at an event as part of the annual UN campaign ’16 Days Against Gender-based Violence’ on Tuesday 29 November 2022 hosted by Queen Camilla, 75. On Instagram she describes how she was repeatedly asked about her origins by Lady Susan Hussey, 83, the former lady-in-waiting of Queen Elizabeth, †96, and godmother of Prince William, 40, and she did not want to accept that Fulani lives in Great Britain and was born.

An extremely shocking experience that prompted the palace to take immediate action. Lady Susan Hussey was fired and resigned from her honorary post with immediate effect.

Decision from the royal family causes criticism

A reaction that is approved by many today, but also causes criticism. Because as terrible as Lady Susan Hussey’s behavior was, there are also voices that the palace acted too hastily. Royal expert Richard Kay says in the “Daily Mail” that the extremely quick reaction reveals “the extreme sensitivity of the palace to the issue”. Especially when you consider that the Netflix documentary of Prince Harry, 38, and Duchess Meghan, 41, is about to air and could again raise the question of who in the royal family made an allegedly racist remark about their son Archie, 3, made. The palace felt under pressure and had to counteract quickly.

Richard Kay has repeatedly heard that some see it as “unfair” the way an elderly lady who has devoted her life to the Royals is being treated. Instead, one could have calmly considered which step to take and not let oneself be tempted by the media into reacting prematurely. Friends of Lady Susan Hussey assume that she probably didn’t do anything wrong, but was just doing her job and was misunderstood.

What really happened on site, however, can neither be properly judged by experts nor by friends.
