Duchess Meghan launched her first children’s book, “The Bench”, in early June. Now she has explained where the name comes from.

On his first father’s day, Duchess Meghan (39) gave her husband Prince Harry (36) a very special gift: a bank. She explained that now in conversation with the US radio network “NPR”, which aired June 20 for Father’s Day in the United States. The interview was recorded shortly before the birth of little Lilibet “Lili” Diana Mountbatten-Windsor on June 4th. Lili is the couple’s second child, son Archie (2) was born in 2019.

“Like most of us, I too thought: What should I give him?”, The Duchess recalls. “I wanted something that was sentimental and a place that could be a piece of home for him and our son.” She put a small plaque on the bank on which she wrote a poem. This is about all the moments that she hoped Prince Harry and son Archie would share on the bench.

“This is your bank,” says the poem. “Where life will begin, for you and our son, our baby, our family.” Duchess Meghan’s first children’s book “The Bench”, which was also published at the beginning of June 2021, later emerged from the personal poem and Father’s Day gift for Harry.

“The Bench” is a “love story”

Meghan can still remember how it felt to grow up and not feel represented. That should be different with “The Bench”: “Hopefully every child or every family can open this book and find themselves in it – regardless of whether they wear glasses, have freckles, have a different body shape, a different ethnicity or religion.”

The book is “a love story” that was inspired by the love between Harry and Archie, explains Meghan. In general, however, it is about “growing together with someone and developing this deep bond, this trust”. Meghan hopes readers can see the book as the very “love story that’s bigger than my family’s story”.
