On June 19, 1999, the wedding bells rang. In a relatively modest ceremony, Prince Edward, 59, and Sophie Rhys-Jones, 58, said yes in St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle. He: the youngest son of Queen Elizabeth, †96, and Prince Philip, †99. She: the daughter of a tire dealer and an Oxford secretary. An unusual pairing that caused a lot of ridicule in the British tabloid press in the first few years thanks to a few faux pas. Today, the Duchess of Edinburgh in particular, but also her husband, are very popular with Royal fans. After the first offensives to streamline the monarchy of King Charles, 74, you didn’t fall behind, but shine in the front row. A wondrous phenomenon for which the royal expert Jennie Bond went in search of clues.

Duchess Sophie and Prince Edward: Their marriage started with a scandal

Right at the beginning of her marriage to Edward, Sophie made a serious mistake. At that time, the trained secretary still had her own PR company. In 2001, during what was supposed to be a business lunch, she fell into the trap of chattering away, making the occasional thoughtless remark about members of the royal family and British politicians. The perfidious thing: your conversation partner was a reporter disguised as a sheikh, who of course immediately turned the spicy information into hearty headlines. Another interview with the Royal entitled “My Edward is not gay” crowned the already unpleasant debacle a little later.

Sophie doesn’t let herself be fooled

But despite her scandalous entry into the royal family, Sophie showed one thing above all: fearlessness and backbone. Qualities that benefited her when she married into the royal family, as Jenny Bond stated in an interview with “OK! Magazine”. She believes the Duchess “was pretty daring to become another royal bride.” After all, she knew about the not exactly glorious divorces of other royal couples: The sensational separation of the then Prince Charles from Princess Diana, † 36, was followed by Prince Andrew, 63, and Sarah Ferguson, 63, as well as Princess Anne, 72, and Mark Phillips, 74, the final love off. No special incentive for a love in the shadow of the crown.

“She has remained true to herself, compassionate and discreet”

But Sophie and Edward had a minimal advantage over the family’s failed couples, Bond believes: they were “mature enough to know they were meant to be together” when they married. She was 34 and he was 35.

In addition, the bride of the queen’s son is said to have no outstanding airs to this day. “Sophie has always been a gentle, kind creature who goes about her work calmly without making a fuss,” explains Bond. “She has remained true to herself, compassionate and discreet, becoming almost like a second daughter to the late Queen.” And Prince Philip quickly discovered his heart for his daughter-in-law. The journalist is certain that she “won the admiration of the late Duke of Edinburgh.” According to her, “there was a clear affection” for the son’s wife.

The Miraculous Change of Prince Edward

However, Bond has had to change her view of Edward over the years. “I always thought Edward was a little pompous, but after seeing him interact with the crowd at Buckingham Palace at the Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards ceremony and other performances, I think he felt a lot in his own skin feels more comfortable,” says the Royal expert. “He’s a lot more confident in his role and is a great entertainer, especially with kids.”

Should Sophie have a hand in the almost unnoticed development of her husband from the rather jaded monarch’s scion to the self-confident senior royal and father of a family? It seems anything but far-fetched. “Edward and Sophie have a very secure marriage and seem to support each other in everything they do. They are also absolutely devoted parents to Lady Louise and James.”
