The search engine very focused on data security is setting up a tool based on ChatGPT simply called DuckAssist.
Unlike Microsoft’s AI-infused Bing, this tool is not a chatbot, but rather a way to quickly find information from Wikipedia.
A “corner” quick search on Wikipedia
The popular DuckDuckGo has just recently launched its own ChatGPT-powered tool in beta, which is already available for free on the desktop and mobile versions of the engine. It is not, however, a conversational AI in the literal sense of the word.
” DuckAssist is a new type of instant response in our search results, just like other topics on our engine. We’ve made sure it’s fully integrated with DuckDuckGo’s private search, taking on the look and feel of our traditional search results, so it feels natural to use. “Said Gabriel Weinberg, CEO of the browser.
Asking DuckAssist a question will lead, if it finds a relevant keyword in the query, to an automatic response that will dig into Wikipedia data to provide an answer, as you can see in the image at the top of this article.
A safer approach to assisted research
” For this first trial, DuckAssist will mainly appear in our search results when users ask questions that have a simple and straightforward answer on Wikipedia “says Gabriel Weinberg. Ask a question like: What is a search engine index? in DuckDuckGo will see a magic wand appear that will return to DuckAssist with an instant response.
This desire to limit the data from which DuckAssist will draw is part of the objective of avoiding the sometimes erratic behavior of more developed artificial intelligences such as a traditional chatbot. Microsoft in particular paid the price with Bing and thus had to limit the capacities of its “intelligent” search engine for a time.
As Gabriel Weinberg points out, DuckAssist is only the first stone mixed with artificial intelligence planned on the DuckDuckGo building. Other similar tools are in the boxes. On the other hand, the search engine is committed to ensuring that all of this respects its highest priority: ensuring data security and respect for the privacy of its users.
