Due to Brexit, the thousands of .eu domain names owned by the British have been deleted

This is one of the consequences of Brexit. The UK’s exit from the European Union is pushing companies located in Great Britain and Northern Ireland to change their domain name.

The withdrawal agreement nonetheless provided for a transition period which allowed English websites to continue to benefit from the “.eu” extension until 1er January 2021. As the deadline has ended, thousands of domain names have now been suspended.

48,000 European domain names have been deleted

So 48,000 domain names belonging to British organizations or individuals were taken offline indefinitely on January 3, 2022 by the EURid (European Registry for Internet Domains). They then became available for purchase on the basis of ” first come, first served “, of which Leave.euone of the most prominent pro-Brexit sites.

In total, more than 80,000 UK owners of European domains have been informed in recent months that their “.eu” extension is in danger of being revoked if they do not provide proof of their eligibility in time. The organization mandated by the European Commission since 2016 recalls that the “.eu” is reserved only for citizens and organizations from the European Union.
