Duel of the greatest boxers
Taylor wins the mega fight covered in blood

Madison Square Garden is a legendary arena – and for the first time in 140 years sees a main fight between two female boxers. Katie Taylor defends her four world championship belts against Amanda Serrano. A rematch between the two exceptional athletes already seems to be in the works.

In the duel between the two most successful female boxers in the world, Ireland’s Katie Taylor made history in New York. The 35-year-old defeated Puerto Rico’s Amanda Serrano in front of a sold-out crowd of 19,187 at Madison Square Garden in the first major match between two women in the legendary arena’s 140-year history.

By winning points after ten rounds, she successfully defended her titles according to the WBA, WBC, IBF and WBO associations in the lightweight category. “I had to get everything out,” said Taylor: “We demanded everything, that’s for sure”, who spoke of the “best night of her career”. She also paid tribute to her opponent: “She’s a phenomenal fighter and a great person.”

Brooklyn native Serrano took Taylor down in the fifth round, but the defending champion fought on, covered in blood, and had the momentum on her side in the final rounds. She remains undefeated even after 21 professional fights. For Serrano, who had previously been the first boxer to collect world titles in seven different weight classes and had risen two weight classes for the duel, it was the first defeat since 2012. “We put on an amazing show,” said the 33-year-old: ” Women can sell, women can fight.”

Both boxers promised a rematch immediately afterwards. “Let’s do it again, Amanda,” Taylor said during her victory interview. “Whenever she wants,” her opponent replied.

Promoter Eddie Hearn had heavily promoted the duel in advance, calling it the female version of the “fight of the century” between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquaio in May 2015. Referring to his own statements after the fight between Taylor and Serrano, he said: “What we saw today was one of the biggest fights in the history of Madison Square Garden.”
