Paul Atreides, the hero of Arrakis? This is not how the story of “Dune” should be understood, which is why director Denis Villeneuve is planning another sequel after “Dune 2”.

Warner Bros., like so many film studios in Hollywood, has become more cautious. They all love a good franchise, but particularly ambitious plans are often not implemented, for example if the audience’s interest is lower than expected. For example, there were supposed to be five “Fantastic Beasts” films, but after the third film the series was put on hold.
With “Dune,” Warner Bros. was more cautious from the start. Although Villeneuve wanted to divide the plot of the first novel into two parts, Warner did not shoot both films in one go, which would have been cheaper and more time-saving in the long run, but rather waited for the release of “Dune” in autumn 2021.
Fans, director Denis Villeneuve and Warner Bros. breathed a sigh of relief when Dune made enough money to justify a sequel. This will now start in cinemas on February 29, 2024, and at least one more film is planned. However, this would take a direction that many viewers hardly expected after the first film.

Denis Villeneuve sensibly wants to end his “Dune” trilogy with an adaptation of “The Lord of the Desert Planet.” In an interview with Empire he already went into detail here.
If I manage to do a trilogy, that would be the dream. “The Lord of the Desert Planet” was written in response to the fact that people perceived Paul Atreides as a hero. That’s not what [Autor Frank Herbert] wanted to do. My adaptation [von “Dune”] is closer to his idea that it is actually a warning.

Paul Atreides is the main character in “Dune” and can at least initially be clearly understood as the hero of the story, but that changes as the plot progresses. Viewers should always question Paul’s actions and not automatically think they are morally right just because we are used to it in other books and films.
The manageable length of “The Lord of the Desert Planet” means that the story can easily be told in a film, while the rather unpopular follow-up novel “The Children of the Desert Planet” is difficult to bring to the screen. So Villeneuve’s plan to stop after the third film makes perfect sense and we can only hope that Warner Bros. doesn’t insist on more films afterwards.
