“Dune 2” has finally been released in German cinemas and continues the epic sci-fi series with stars like Timothée Chalamet (“Wonka”), Florence Pugh and Austin Butler. In addition to the previous storylines and characters, others are added in the second part, which are of great importance in Frank Herbert’s novel. This also includes the Fremen.
It wasn’t until the end of “Dune” that Chani (Zendaya, “Euphoria”) herself appeared, when Paul Atreides and his mother Lady Jessica joined the Fremen. Their people are native to the desert planet Arrakis and are adapted to the harsh living conditions. They also have their own language, which becomes more apparent in the second part.
Although the Fremen language was invented by Frank Herbert in the “Dune” books, in “Dune 2” it gives a special flavor among the members of the native people. During an appearance on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” director Denis Villeneuve recently explained the more detailed background to the Fremen language in the film:
“The language was like a whole poetry and a whole internal logic. For example, at one point when Zendaya is talking to Stellan Skarsgard, her character Chani says to Skarsgard: ‘You’re crazy, you’re insane.’ she says [also]: ‘You’re crazy.’ But the way she says it in the Fremen language is like, ‘You drink sand.’ This is of course the ultimate madness for a Fremen.”
