As the whole world eagerly awaits the cinema release of Dune – part two, scheduled for February 28, 2024, Warner Bros. would already be planning what happens next. The studio would have given the green light to the feature film titled The Messiah of Dune (Dune: Messiah in original version) with a release date for 2027 in sight.

The information – unconfirmed – comes to us from the blog of the very knowledgeable Jeff Sneider. In his newsletter published last week, the journalist shares some rumors from the corridors: “I’m already hearing rumors that Warner Bros. is so optimistic about Villeneuve’s vision of Dune that the third part has already been given the green light with a release date of 2027. Warner Bros. considers the second part a predicted success, and I heard that the studio is already planning a box office start above $100 million.”

This information corroborates recent comments by director Denis Villeneuve (Blade Runner 2049, Dune), indicating that he has almost completed the scenario of this potential Dune 3. “If I succeed in making a trilogy, it would be the dream, he said last August. The Messiah of Dune was written because people perceived Paul Atreides as a hero. This is not what he wanted to be. My adaptation of Dune is closer to the idea of the warning”.
Denis Villeneuve also declared that he intended to make an original film after the release of Dune – part two before diving back into the scenery of Arrakis to Dune 3.

Published in 1969, The Messiah of Dune is the second opus of Dune Cycle by Frank Herbert. It takes place 14 years after the events of the first one. It was followed by more esoteric novels Children of Dune, The God-Emperor of Dune, The Heretics of Dune And Mother’s House.
These numerous works represent a gold mine for Warner Bros., which intends to make the universe of Frank Herbert its future big science fiction franchise.
