Dune: Timothée Chalamet posed a big problem for Denis Villeneuve

Adapting Dune was a monumental ordeal for Denis Villeneuve, who succeeded in bringing the abundant work of Frank Herbert to the screen. But what was his biggest challenge on the film? The decorations ? The costumes ? Special effects ?

A great public success with more than 3 million spectators in theaters, the feature film Dune is broadcast this Friday evening on Canal+. Adapting the colossal work of Frank Herbert was no easy task for Denis Villeneuve, who had to take up an almost impossible challenge. David Lynch and Alejandro Jodorowsky tried before him and broke their teeth at the scale of the project.

The Canadian director has not backed down from the various challenges, from writing to costumes, including sets and special effects. But one aspect of the feature film was extremely complicated for him: the hair of its main actor, Timothée Chalamet, who plays Paul Atréides.

A CHALLENGE PULLED BY THE HAIR

During the press conference at the Venice Film Festival, the director made comical revelations on this subject. “I had to direct Timothée but above all I had to manage his haircut. They were alive!”, joked Denis Villeneuve. Apparently, the comedian’s tousled locks caused the filmmaker problems during filming, to the point of making it “his biggest challenge”.

I had to direct Timothée but above all I had to manage his haircut.

Not devoid of caustic humour, the director kindly made fun of the reputation of the young 25-year-old actor, whose hair has been talked about a lot in the past. From Call Me By Your Name to A Rainy Day in New York to Lady Bird, Hostiles and The King, the comedian’s shaggy mane is a big talking point for fans. What would Timothée Chalamet be without his disheveled haircut?

After Dune, reunite with Timothée (and his messy hair) in Wes Anderson’s The French Dispatch, in theaters October 27.
