DXOMARK proves that USB-C is not synonymous with universal charger

DXOMARK compared the behavior of the chargers of the Xiaomi 12 Pro, Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra, Oppo Find X5 and Google Pixel 6 when plugged into phones from another brand. Verdict: it’s not famous. Only Google comes out with its head held high.

The switch to USB-C for the entire European continent will be fully implemented by the end of 2024. The ambition of the European authorities is clear: to impose a universal charging port to reduce the carbon impact of sales of electronic devices short.

A noble goal, but one that could be jeopardized by smartphone manufacturers. In recent years, the phone market has seen a variety of proprietary fast charging standards flourish. SuperVOOC at Oppo, HyperCharge at Xiaomi… everyone goes by their nickname. If the idea is of course to try to offer the best charging service to its customers, the result is often that a very precise fast charge will not work as well with the smartphone of a competitor opposite. and vice versa.

DXO did the test

To be convinced of this, just look at the test carried out by DXOMARK. The company specializing in lab tests put the chargers of the Xiaomi 12 Pro, Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra, Oppo Find X5 and Google Pixel 6 to the test.

For Samsung, Oppo and Xiaomi, the observation is clear: the load peak is reached only with the smartphone of its own brand. On the other hand, the Google charger, capable of going up to 30W while the Pixel 6 supports a charge of up to around 23W, does indeed manage to deliver all its power to the Galaxy S23 and to go up to 27W on the Xiaomi 12T Pro.

The worst student is Oppo, whose SuperVOOC charger just doesn’t work with its little friends. It timidly reaches 10 W each time. The other brands offer a power of around 20 W which is not flamboyant, but which allows at least one charge in less than 2 hours. Conversely, if you plug a Xiaomi 12T Pro into an Oppo Find X5 charger, it will take you 3 hours and 33 minutes to reach 100%.
