Dyn – what does that mean? This question, which was once asked at the start of DAZN (pronounced ‘Da Zone’ for those who didn’t know it yet), is likely to be on the mind of many a sports fan at the moment. Because for the new season, Dyn is a new player in the sports streaming market, which will show the handball, basketball, volleyball and table tennis leagues, among other things.

However, decoding the pronunciation is at least a little easier than when he was with his colleagues from DAZN, because at first glance two out of three vowels were simply left out indiscriminately and in 2016 you were not used to such a cryptic approach to your own station name was. Just imagine ProSieben being called Prosbn.

Dyn should now be pronounced like the personal pronoun “your”. Which, when you finally “decrypted” it, establishes a connection to the consumer, and therefore of course makes sense. The suspicion is now, of course, that the cryptic proper name (as well as the exclusively sports-related portfolio) is strongly oriented towards DAZN and just wanted to be a little easier to decode.
But on the other hand, Randsport-TV would not have been a solution either. Although the Dyn broadcasting rights are honestly more and more about such sports in descending order from handball – you don’t have to be that honest. Nobody needs “The next Sport1” either. Such combination of terms and numbers may be common in the classic TV landscape, but are irrelevant on the Internet. “Everything but football” (a slogan of the early months) would of course have been the bringer, but probably difficult to market in a football nation like Germany.
But one thing is also striking: the participation of the Axel Springer publishing house, which is also available as a free TV partner with its television station Bild TV, is now apparently being concealed at any price. Although the media company was always mentioned in the same breath as the former DFL boss and now called Dyn shareholder Christian Seifert as “godfather” when the information about the plans for a new sports streaming service leaked out. In the meantime there is no trace of it in the imprint (or anywhere else).

But if you look at the notification of approval from the responsible KEK (Commission for Determining Concentration in the Media Sector), you quickly find out that the people behind Bild and Co. are not only at Dyn with 74.9 percent of the shares in the company in the boat but sit at the rudder. Seifert and his Reedstreet Ventures GmbH hold the remaining 25.1 percent.
