Dresden throws out coach and brings in Bundesliga legend

At the halfway point of the season, Dynamo Dresden is still on course for promotion, but their return to the 2nd Bundesliga is now in serious danger. The third division team reacts and separates from coach Markus beginning. A club icon should now fix it.

There are great concerns at Dynamo Dresden. After only one win from the last eight third division games, the big goal of returning to the 2nd Bundesliga is in massive jeopardy. Following the 2-0 home defeat against Viktoria Köln on matchday 34, the traditional club is now drawing conclusions: Coach Markus beginning has to vacate his post with immediate effect, and a trio led by Ulf Kirsten will take over on the sidelines for the last four matchdays of the season. The Bundesliga legend (182 first division goals for Bayer Leverkusen) should, together with previous assistant coach Heiko Scholz and U19 coach Willi Weiße, secure at least third place in the relegation zone.

However, Dynamo is in danger of losing it this Sunday if their pursuers Preußen Münster (against bottom team SC Freiburg II) and 1. FC Saarbrücken (against RW Essen) win their home games. “I think we left a lot behind,” Beginn said after the defeat against Cologne, also referring to the previous games. Dresden started the second half of the season in second place, seven points ahead of third place, but is currently looking like a relegated team – only bottom club Freiburg II and second-to-last VfB Lübeck are in a worse position in the second half of the series.

“The decision was anything but easy for us. When we signed Markus beginning, we set ourselves a common goal, which we continue to keep firmly in mind,” said managing director David Fischer. “However, we have come to the realization that the quality of the team has become increasingly rare over the course of the season and that the desired results have not been achieved.” The direct promotion places are already six or seven points away, the top duo SSV Ulm 1846 and Jahn Regensburg meet in a direct duel today.

The previous assistant coach Scholz, U19 coach Weiße and the long-time Dynamo striker Kirsten should work together to provide the “impulse” invoked in the press release about the initial release. Kirsten was most recently the club’s sporting advisor. During his active career, he moved from Dresden to Leverkusen in the summer of 1990 after the fall of the Berlin Wall and became a Bundesliga star there. In the 1993 DFB Cup final, he scored the winning goal to make it 1-0 – Bayer’s last title for a long time, before the Werkself recently won the championship for the first time.

Kirsten & Co. are now supposed to complete what Markus initially no longer believes they can do. The coach, who resigned from SV Werder Bremen in 2021 because of a fake corona vaccination certificate, took over Dresden in the summer of 2022 after relegation to the 3rd league and led it to 6th place in the first season – just one point behind promoted team VfL Osnabrück and relegation participants SV Contractions Wiesbaden. This season, the SGD was on course for promotion for a long time, but the course of the season and the form curve currently speak against the Saxons. Next week Dresden has to play in Regensburg, and on Wednesday there is also the state cup semi-final away to the regional league team FSV Zwickau.
